Power Monitoring – Data Logging

Power monitoring is one the most powerful tools of the energy auditor. By recording data such as A, V, kW, kVA, kVAr, power factor or kWh demand in intervals as short as 5 seconds, we can establish accurate load profiles for an entire site or individual circuits.

Powersmart Energy Efficiency employs a range of power monitors ranging from 5000A per phase polyphase power meters to smart, cloud based monitors that allow remote monitoring via web interface.

Cloud based monitors allow for interactive monitoring. For example, to narrow down a suspect device, the client can turn off individual devices or appliances and observe via web interface the resulting demand graphs. We install these sophisticated tools for a small weekly charge and assist in interpreting the data.

We also use time-of-use smart loggers to establish the duty cycle of motors, compressors, sensor lights and float operated pumps. This can be extremely useful to determine the real operating hours of compressors, float operated pumps, security food lights etc.

Applications

  • Establishing kVA demand peaks and the cause of those peaks
  • Assessing power factor and related kVA demand charges
  • Assessing and sizing PV Solar systems
  • Assessing the viability of battery storage solutions
  • Understanding the contribution of major loads, such as aircon, refrigeration, lighting etc. to total power consumption
  • Understanding night time (off hours) power consumption
  • Measuring the impact of major energy efficiency retrofits
  • Assessing the suitability of the existing electricity tariffs
  • Checking billing data versus data logger data to identify faulty meters
